Making Sweet Cereal A Little Healthier

My husband and I love sweet cereal!  As a result, so do our kids!

Over the years, we've spoiled ourselves (and our kids) with a pantry full of delicious, sweet cereal choices for the morning (and for late-night snacking)!

Well, Since Ryan and I have started eating healthier (remember my posts of losing 30 lbs?) we've learned to enjoy some new breakfast choices (like Mini-Wheats!) but, still, we have a weakness for the sweet, kids cereals.

So here's what we've done to make them a little healthier as we wean the kids (and ourselves) off of them!

Mixing Trix and Kix
We bought a couple of these plastic cereal boxes at WalMart ($5)
We mix a full box of Trix with a full box of Kix (both are off-brand)
This is just a small portion of the finished product, but as you can see,
it's still colorful enough to trick please the kiddos!

The Key: Each time you mix the cereal,
add less and less of the "sweet" cereal...
next thing you know, your family is weaned!!!  :)

We have also mixed Cocoa Puffs with Kix...it's pretty tasty, actually!

We do the same with Frosted Flakes and Corn Flakes

We also have two of these smaller boxes (WalMart $2.50) for mixing...
1) Honey Nut Cheerios and plain Cheerios
2) Apple Cinnamon Cheerios and plain Cheerios

(Since Cheerios are pretty healthy, all-in-all, we've kept this mixture even and don't plan to "wean" off of the sweeter cereal here...instead, it just makes them even healthier!)
It works for us!

What a great idea !!! My kids like sweet cereal but since I got Wic when they were young and they don't allow sweet cereal , it sorta got them used to the non sweet. Every once in a while I would buy one that was sweet. Sorta like a treat.
Thanx for sharing this.

This is hilarious! I am totally addicted to kids cereal... Brian always makes fun of me for not eating "grown up" cereal! We try to eat pretty healthy, but this is my weakness! I'll have to try this! :)

What a great idea!

We usually save the sweet cereal for snacks rather than breakfast, but I like this idea better!

My hubby was kinda laughing at me the other day as we were strolling down the cereal aisle and he'd point out his childhood favorites and I'd respond to each by saying, "I've never had that one either!" After realizing his wife missed out on most of the junk food cereals in the entire selection he decided that I should at least try Cookie Crisp once in my life. Yeah it's good... but I still prefer my Raisin Bran Crunch! ;) And oddly enough my kids LOVE Raisin Bran too. Although the little fellow still mostly just picks out the raisins. I guess we're just weird!

I LOVE cereal! When I am really hungry mid-day, nothing fills me up like cereal!

mmm...good idea! We mix our sweet cereal with puffed rice or puffed wheat (comes in a cheap bag at Wal-Mart) and it's surprisingly delicious!

I call sugar cereal "sprinkles" we sprinkle it on the cardboard stuff. :) The kids love that!

Hahaha, I do the same thing! I absolutely adore chocolate lucky charms, and I mix them half and half with plain cheerios, so good together and makes it a little more economical too.

Great idea, Grace!!! I do a bit of this but you've made me want to do more. Yesterday, my eldest commented that his bowl had Raisin Bran, Cheerios and Corn Flakes in it. Oops :) Guess I don't try to match up as well as you do!!
